Character (Native OC)
Name: Dante
Age: 48
Gender: Male
Home: Ka'Pandol
History: Even as a tiny little fish, Dante was a thrill seeker. Growing up in the prime center of Blitzball certainly helped, inspiring the young zora to take up the sport in his free time. He played it a lot and, for a brief period of time, considered going professional. He thought it was the perfect outlet, going head to head with some of the world's greatest athletes in fierce competition, crowds roaring and rooting for him...

...But it didn't quite do it for the adventurous zora. As intense as blitzball could get, there wasn't enough thrill in it for him. Not enough risk, not the right kind of excitement. Although the realization bummed him out, Dante eventually found his true calling: adventuring. Going on quests, fighting monsters, exploring dungeons, finding treasures...now that got his blood pumping!

Besides, fame was never his thing, anyway.

He settled on Dark Knight with Gunslinger as his second job, getting a kick out of the risks of the dark knight's power and natural style of gunslinging (and let's be real here: Dante's always been extra). He was small time in those days, but that was alright with him; that never stopped him from going out to fight the occasional beastie and developing his skills in ways that felt like they'd actually mean something.

Partway through his adventuring days, he came across a peculiar sight: a young woman sinking into the ocean off the shores of Lavode. The current swept her up and there was no one else around. Dante didn't hesitate in saving the woman's life, bringing her down to his home in Ka'Pandol to recuperate. He nursed her back to health and heard her story of wanting revenge against the one who did this to her. Feeling responsible for her life, Dante took it upon himself to teach her what he knew about combat so she could defend herself and, eventually, get some much deserved payback.

The two developed a strong friendship and he took to calling her Lady, a nickname at first, but one she adopted in place of her true name. Once she felt she was ready, Lady set off on her own and Dante went his own way, continuing his life of adventuring but never fully breaking contact with his new friend. They regularly kept in touch, even if they didn't always work together. Lady became a damn fine adventurer in her own right, becoming fond of gunslinging in particular, and often kept Dante's inbox full of requests so his own questing could continue.

Unfortunately for the zora, tragedy struck when his travels brought him to an encounter against hamsters, dreaded foes feared all across Vaikuntha. Even he knew his skills would be put to the test against them and, frankly, he was lucky to escape the battle with his life. He sustained hefty injuries that ultimately took him out of the standard adventurer lifestyle, forcing him let go of his Dark Knight and Gunslinger asterisks.

He couldn't give up there, however. Though he decided to lay down his sword and firearms, Lady brought up the idea of alternate jobs instead, noting how well he trained her and helped get her life back together after it went down the toilet. With her help, he settled on Gourmand (to continue fighting monsters and putting the spoils of his victories to use) and chemist (a popular support class that helps others continue the fight). It was the perfect alternative.

Sure, it wasn't as flashy and Gourmands had a reputation of being nightmare inducing with the abilities they gained later on, but Dante is nothing if not up for a challenge. He made it work and it turns out he has a knack for being a mentor and supporter, features that got around thanks to his own questing and Lady spreading the word around for him. Eventually, word reached the Curti Center that he and his partner could be of great help towards the offworlders and Lady wasted no time in filling him in...

Personality: The cool, devil may care attitude is a given for all forms of Dante and this one is no different. Confidence is key to looking as stylish as he does, being a crowd pleaser through and through. This carried over from his days of trying to become a professional blitzball player, maintaining that attitude even if that career path didn't pan out.

Instead, he's more of a thrill seeker, aiming to find the next rush of adrenaline and do some good at the same time. Taking up a life of adventuring did both, battling all kinds of monsters, solving mysteries and generally having a good time because of it. He has no interest in becoming famous, however, as he was content in being small-time and simply having fun doing what he does best. Unfortunately, what he does best, mixed with his confidence, has lead to moments of arrogance. He can be full of himself sometimes and always enjoys showing off. Again, he learned to make a show of his talents while practicing blitzball, even if the only audience around is himself. This lead to his downfall some time in his career when he encountered hamsters; an adventurer of his experience would know that they're nothing to scoff at, yet he refused to back down and matched his skill and wits against them.

If nothing else, the experience humbled Dante considerably, a smaller reward in favor of surviving the encounter. Despite the blow to his ego, the zora demonstrated the ability to dust himself off and keep going, trading Dark Knight and Gunslinger for Gourmand and Chemist. While they weren't the front line attackers he was used to playing, it was something he could handle just the same. To him, it was like switching from star blitzball shooter to goalie: he may not be as prominent a member, but that doesn't disqualify his efforts in the end.

Being a mentor turned out to be a natural talent of his, one he hadn't quite realized until sometime after becoming a Gourmand. He has a sense of compassion that isn't always visible and the diligence to stick with someone to help them become better. Lady was the prime example of this, raising her from a normal woman into a proud gunslinger and even a partner. By the time he switched classes, Dante realized he could take on that kind of work more often and welcomed it wholeheartedly.

Although he took up whatever work he can, Dante didn't always do it for the money. Sometimes, it was to do a good deed or to have a little fun. Although these acts of generosity are noteworthy, they don't always cover his bills and have been a key reason in Lady continuously supplying him with quests and, ultimately, recommending him to the Curti Center. That way, he could still do what he does and keep a regular paycheck. With offworlders being completely unpredictable and capable of anything, the thrill seeker in him couldn't turn the opportunity away.

Their Past Self
Name: Dante
Canon: Devil May Cry
Personal History: The best hobo
Personality: Much of Dante's personality matches his native incarnation, but aside from the obvious difference between the two, there's a major difference between these twin lives: his demonic origins. Being the son of Sparda, a powerful and legendary demon, grants Dante incredible power and resilience, able to shrug off fatal blows with no issue and perform even greater feats of style.

The result? Canon Dante is even more showy and egotistical. With his demonic powers, he can perform impossibly cool stunts like running down the side of a tower, surfing on missiles or spontaneously summoning confetti for whatever reason. He performs these stunts regularly, whether as a means of having fun, taunting his enemies or having fun taunting his enemeis. This, with his incredible defenses, make him both a formidable opponent and even more nonchalant about the tasks in front of him. That confidence even lets him joke and snark at powerful enemies like demons several times his size or those with great control over the elements, knowing that he can beat them with little effort.

This Dante doesn't simply destroy everything with his incredible might, however. With all of that power at his disposal, he doesn't tap into much of it unless he has to. More often than not, he enjoys the challenge of limiting himself and only using so much strength during fights, allowing more room to get flashy and toy with his foes. Unlike the native zora, who takes a more supportive role and isn't nearly as powerful, this Dante enjoys taking center stage whenever he can. By his canon point in Devil May Cry 4, he's at least willing to let others enjoy the limelight, letting Nero take care of business with the game's big baddie and playing a supporting role to a lesser degree.

This isn't to say Dante is a complete doof. Well, he is, but he's had his own canonical humbling moment in the form of his childhood. His demonic origins lead to the death of his mother, something that had him hating his demon blood for a good chunk of his life. The forces of Hell are determined to get their revenge against Sparda, even if it means attacking his children and their loved ones. It's because of this that Dante cherishes the ones who stick with him, knowing that being around him can automatically paint a target on their backs. For as difficult as it can be to kill him, those he loves aren't always as invulnerable.

Despite his tragic backstory, he doesn't limit his choice of friends by what's in their blood. Through his adventures, Dante's come to accept that anyone has the potential for good or evil, whether they're human, demon or otherwise. Trish, one of his greatest allies, was a demon created to lure him into a trap by modeling her after his dead mother. Despite her betrayal, they became fast friends and she helped him warm up to the belief that not all demons are evil. As a counterpoint, Arkham was a human man who sacrificed his wife to gain demonic power and manipulated Dante and his brother to gain even more power. Although Dante makes it a point to not harm humans, people like Arkham are an exception. He may be known as a demon hunter, but Dante makes sure to target the “real” demons lurking about.

Even with all of this, Dante still finds time to maintain a playful, goofy demeanor and not let himself be weighed down by past regrets or the blood flowing through his veins. It's a trait his friends can easily recognize and something that can trick his enemies into underestimating him...so long as they don't immediately smell Sparda's blood within him. His friends might instead catch a glimpse of the compassionate man underneath, so willing to put himself on the line for others and being a big softie, even if he doesn't admit it. After the events of DMC4, he let Nero keep Yamato, his deceased brother's sword. When Nero questioned the gift, noting how much the sword means to Dante, he simply retorted “That's the only kind of gift worth giving.” He might play the role of the veteran badass, but if nothing else, Dante doesn't hold back on his compassion like he does his raw power.
