Pokémon come in all different shapes and sizes; while the smaller ones are more common, there are some that are as large as buildings. For example, the largest Pokémon I own is twenty-one feet tall.
As for the trading thing, I don't quite understand the mechanics behind it, either, but that's how it works. Once you give it to the other person, it will evolve, and then all you have to do is get it back from them. Of course, there are people out there who may decide to keep it for themselves, so it's safest to do it with a friend.
